COMPETITION • EUROPEAN LAW • FIELD OF APPLICATION
The EU competition rules apply to economic activities, although no legal definition of that term is given. An economic activity, according to the case law, is anything that can be the subject of trade. It covers all production, distribution and service activities. National football associations, for example, carry out a production, distribution and service activity, as they pay FIFA a percentage of the gross receipts from each international match and are recognized as owners of the exclusive broadcasting and transmission rights to the sporting events in question.
